THIRD-PARTY SOURCES FOR BROKERS

In your search for a broker, it is a good idea to look at third-party sources. Here are several useful professional resources.

International Association of Merger and Acquisition Professionals (www.imap.com). This group provides information and networking opportunities for brokers. It publishes a quarterly newsletter on M&A that you can download from the Web site.

Institute of Business Appraisers (www.instbus app.org). Established in 1978, the IBA is the oldest professional society for the appraisal of closely held businesses. The Institute provides its 3,000-plus members with technical support, market data, and education programs. IBA offers a Certified Business Appraiser (CBA) accreditation. To qualify, candidates must have four years of college, provide references, and complete a four-hour, proctored exam covering the theory and practice of business appraisal. Finally, they must submit two comprehensive business appraisal reports.

International Business Brokers Association (www.ibba.org). IBBA membership comprises more than 900 business brokers and intermediaries in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. The association offers a Certified Business Intermediary (CBI) accreditation. Candidates must have at least three years' experience as a broker, complete 60 credit hours of courses -- and score at least 75% on each exam.
